Jazzin’ it up in the Royal City

Ed and Salve Dayao

This husband and wife duo have been playing and performing music together for over two decades.

Ed and Salve Dayao present a unique blend of multilingual vocals such as Spanish, Japanese, English, Filipino, Chinese with about 15 more different dialects blending with instrumental music from pop to jazz in many different international venues.

Ed and Salve left Manila in the mid-seventies. They have performed as a musical duo in various hotels and night spots in Japan, the Middle- East and Australia before they came to Canada in 1986. Salve could sing songs from 19 different countries. She is accompanied on the piano by Ed, an accomplished composer-arranger who is an equally versatile performer.

In 1991, they opened their first Filipino-Canadian voice, music and dance studio at their home in New Westminster that served as a training ground for many young talents, some of whom are now performing artists.

Ed and Salve have set the record as the longest running house performers for close to 10 years at Trader’s Vic and Garden Lounge at the Westin Bayshore Hotel. They have also performed in different venues in Vancouver such as the Fairmont, the Pan Pacific and other five-star hotels and top clubs in the Lower Mainland.

Unlike many of jazz performers,  Ed and Salve have pursued music in order to fulfill their dream . . . to have their own music lounge.  That dream materialized into a reality when they opened Java Jazz Cafe & Bistro in New Westminster five years ago, which continues to be a top destination for food and music connoisseurs.

The singing couple is now in the restaurant business and have proven to be equally successful in their new venture that caters to the mainstream crowd and  serves diners reflecting different segments of society.

When Ed is on the piano filling the room with notes of glorious classics,  his wife Salve with various family members take turns on the microphone (between cooking and serving guests) giving toe-tapping renditions.

When livelier and more up beat music is required, they can play swing, jive and blues to get everyone on their feet and dancing.

On March 29, Ed and Salve together with daughter Mia and their own Java Jazz band,  will participate in their much awaited performance with popular Filipino singer-song writer Jose Marie Chan at the Glad Tidings Church located at 3456 Fraser St.

“We are all excited and proud to perform with Jose Mari Chan,” Salve said. Chan’s hit songs, like “Beautiful Girl,” “Refrain,” “Afterglow”  and “Constant Change” are considered pop classics and are cherished for their uncomplicated melodies and lyrics which everyone can relate to.

The concert is presented by Manila International Marketing Group. For more information, call concert promoter Leo Dy at 604.780.5621 or visit: www.javajazzbistro.com.
