Philippine dance bridges yesteryear and tomorrow

In its fifteenth season, Kababayang Pilipino (KP) presents “Sulyap,” a glimpse into Filipino life through the traditional art forms of dance and music.  “Sulyap,” literally translated as “a short look,” will give its audiences exactly that—a peek into the diversity and variety of the numerous forms, styles and functions that dance and music plays in Philippine life.

Through vignettes of eras gone by, to snapshots in time, from the retelling of the legend of Tagabili from the indigenous group the T’boli of Mindanao, to life in the rural Philippine countryside, re-enacting the rice growing season, from planting to harvest, “Sulyap” will demonstrate how dance and music is inextricably linked to the everyday lives of the Filipino people.

For the Filipino people, expression through movement and music is synonymous with living.

In “Sulyap,” KP will also take a short look back, as it brings back some of the most loved pieces of its repertoire.  In its fifteenth season, Kababayang Pilipino continues to push the boundaries, taking what is essentially folk and making it contemporary and completely relevant.  From its desire to discovering new horizons, while commiting to preserve the authenticity of its presentations, Kababayang Pilipino, always looks back to its roots and continues to propel itself forward as one of the premiere Philipppine folk dance companies in Canada.

With an ensemble of over 40 members comprised mainly of first generation Filipinos, KP is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Filipino folk heritage through its presentation of dance and music.

This vibrant group provides the opportunity for its members to educate themselves and in turn, educate the community at large about the rich history and culture of the Filipinos.

Conceived for youth, by youth, KP is ever inspired by each new generation of young people who are eager to discover something of themselves by learning something of the Filipino people to which they are tied in culture, bound in hearth and indelibly marked in spirit.
