Special effect lighting

The City of Richmond is nearing completion of a Detailed Design plan for the No. 3 Road Restoration Project between Cambie Road and Westminster Highway. As part of the design process, the City is investigating streetscape improvements, which include special effect lighting of selected sections of the Canada Line guideway, and would like the public’s input.

As a test, the City is demonstrating night time special lighting effects on the Canada Line guideway on No. 3 Road immediately south of Alderbridge Way from April 23 to 27. This test will light the elevated Canada Line guideway between two columns and will include programmed coloured light changes.

The public is welcome to share their input of special effect lighting treatments with the City by May 5, 2008. Please send comments to citylights@richmond.ca or complete and submit the online feedback form available under Public Participation in No. 3 Road Restoration Project page.

Please note, the decision to incorporate special effect lighting will depend on factors such as safety, cost, funding, visual impact, public and Council assessment. Therefore, the public’s comments regarding this special effect lighting test would be appreciated.

The City anticipates that restoration of No. 3 Road will continue until the fall 2009.

Construction of the Canada Line, the Richmond-Airport-Vancouver rapid transit line, will soon link the City of Richmond to both downtown Vancouver and the Vancouver International Airport.

Some of the key features included in the restoration of No. 3 Road are as follows:

Raised Cycle Lanes with the exception of southbound between Sea Island Way and Alderbridge Way;

Decorative Paving Treatments at Signalized Intersections which provide distinctive and functional improvements to accessibility along No. 3 Road;

Continuous Centre Median throughout with the some exceptions. The width of centre medians are sufficient for street lights and street trees;

Ornamental Lighting which features new double-davit streetlights in the centre medians with complementary pedestrian lighting on the boulevards;

Boulevards Enhancements that focus on pedestrian improvements (lighting, paving and street furniture) predominantly on the east side on No. 3 Road.
