China will light up our skies

The HSBC Celebration of Light China, part of the annual international musical fireworks competition, will take place on Wednesday, July 30.

China’s display is on the third of four nights of the Celebration of Light competition, which attracts the world’s leading fireworks designers to show off their abilities and use the best fireworks material as they vie to be crowned the winner.

The competition takes place in English Bay, starting at 10 p.m. on each of the four nights. This year China will compete against Canada and the United States. Fireworks companies representing their countries perform a 25-minute firework display set to music. Vancouver has hosted the competition since 1990.

The competition kicks off on Wednesday, July 23 with the Canadian entry, followed by the U.S. on Saturday, July 26. The grand finale with all three countries is on Saturday, Aug. 2.

The event is best viewed from English Bay, Kitsilano, Vanier Park, Jericho Beach, and West Vancouver.

For the best seats in English Bay, Prime Viewing Seats are located on top of the Bathhouse Roof, with theatre-style seating and surround-sound music. General admission tickets are $30 each.

Access to Prime Viewing Seats opens at 6 p.m. Entrance to seating is off Beach Avenue at Burnaby Street.
