Spice up your TV viewing

A new television program called Spice, expected to attract regular viewers of Cable Channel 13 as well as new South Asian viewers, will debut at noon on Saturday on Citytv.

The weekly, one-hour, magazine-style show is produced by i.t. Media Broadcasting, western Canada’s largest South Asian media organization that owns two radio stations and produces five other television programs. The new show represents the company’s first venture into programming that is not exclusively South Asian in news or nature.

Shushma Datt, president of ITMB and executive producer of Spice, said the South Asian community in Metro Vancouver is made up of new immigrants who are young professionals, established immigrants and second and third generation South Asians.

"But what binds us as a community is that we want to retain ties to our culture and we also want to be part of the larger community we live in," he said. "We wanted to put a program on air that would fulfil both of those needs."

Spice will be hosted mainly by Simone Grewal, who has previous experience with Breakfast Television on Citytv. She recently joined ITMB as morning co-host on radio station RJ 1200. Shushma Datt will also host a small segment of each episode.
