Thai coffee invades Vancouver

Move over Starbucks and Tim Hortons, a 100 per cent natural Arabica from Northern Thailand coffee named Doi Chaang has already invaded the ever-growing coffee market around Metro Vancouver with over 21 outlets selling the product of this joint Thai-Canadian venture.

Danielle Bauer, Director of Sales & Marketing, said that Doi Chaang Coffee is actually being distributed to over 80 retail stores all across Canada and the market is steadily growing in this “coffee-loving” country.

“Doi Chaang coffee is grown in the forest canopy of a small village in Thailand and freshly roasted in Canada to ensure the highest possible quality for each cup of coffee,” Bauer told The Asian Pacific Post.

“Our Thailand and North American teams have formed a partnership under Doi Chaang Coffee Company with the common goal of providing a world-class single-estate Arabica coffee.”

In Thailand, Doi Chaang Coffee continues to focus on careful cultivation and processing to guarantee only the highest quality coffee beans while in Canada, the expertise in roasting and distribution are provided to ensure that this Thai coffee can be experienced and enjoyed at its best.

Doi Chaang Coffee Corp. International is based in Vancouver, where all financial and administrative operations are controlled, while the subsidiary, Doi Chaang Coffee Company, is based in Calgary which controls the roasting, distribution, and marketing of the beans.

“Together we are confident the most discerning coffee drinkers will appreciate the wonderful flavour and aromas of Doi Chaang Coffee,” Bauer adds. “Our fertilizer is primarily recycled cherry pulp and manure,” says Bauer. “We do not use any chemicals on our coffee plants and our shade-grown cultivation method provides sustainable agriculture, maintains soil quality and eliminates the need for deforestation.”

Doi Chaang Coffee is beyond fair trade. It is a unique partnership between two counties based on equal contributions and ownership.

Current annual coffee production is approximately 300 tons and projected to increase to 4,000 tons per annum over the next five years, of which approximately 60 per cent,  or 2,400 tons of production, will qualify as Grade-A beans and five per cent (200 tons) will qualify as peaberry beans.

Naturally low in caffeine, the Thai coffee has a complex and flavourful profile, which is enhanced and released through cultivating, processing and roasting methods.

Doi Chaang village community sits on a mountainous hillside within the Chiang Rai province of Northern Thailand.

The plantation covers more than 2.5 hectares and is surrounded by lush old forest growth, fresh flowing spring water and breathtaking mountain views.

With the high altitudes, ideal climate and perfect soil conditions, Doi Chaang Village is one of the premium regions of the world to cultivate and process Arabica coffee.

The success of Doi Chaang Coffee has given the once isolated community modern conveniences and opportunities that many other hill tribes people and their villages still lack. The community has over 800 families and a total of 8,000 people.
