MY WORK

Hours worked per week: 40 hours

Years at this position: 3 years

What is the best part of your job?
One of the great things about my current job is the opportunity to work with a diverse group of individuals from different backgrounds and functional areas on a wide variety of projects. I find I can always learn something new from my colleagues.

What are some of the challenges you’re currently facing at work?
Without question, one of the more challenging tasks I’m currently facing is working on the transition from our current legacy financial reporting system to a new enterprise resource planning software package currently used by our corporate head office.

How is this position different from other jobs you’ve had?
My previous jobs were in the construction and manufacturing industries; positions that were traditionally the purview of CMAs.  My current employment with a technology-based organization has uncovered challenges and issues that are unique to this industry. These new experiences have broadened and deepened my existing accounting and financial knowledge.

MY EDUCATION

Degree(s) & Institution (s):
Bachelor of Technology (Accounting) from BCIT and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation

Why did you choose to pursue a CMA?
I decided to pursue a career as a CMA after taking an introductory course in cost accounting at BCIT. It was interesting to see how different products could be accounted for differently, depending on organizational needs. As I already had an interest in manufacturing, choosing which accounting designation to pursue was an easy choice.

When did you complete your CMA program?
September 2002

LIFESTYLE

Favorite recreational activity
Photography, soccer, go-karting and poker; not necessarily in that order.

Possibly travel throughout Asia within the next year or so.

MY FUTURE

In five years, I see myself (both professionally and personally)
In five years time I will have completed the Forensic Accounting certificate from BCIT and possibly be working in that industry as a forensic accountant.
