Barnes Wheaton GM completes tall task

Hercules would be impressed.
The staff at Barnes Wheaton GM North Surrey rallied together last week to clean the dealership's signature landmark: the world largest freestanding flagpole.
It took a considerable amount of muscle and TLC (tender loving care) to return the pole to its original lustre.
Listed in the “Guinness Book of Records”, the flag pole is 282.4 feet high and weighs 130,000 pounds - about the same weight as 16 fully grown adult male elephants.
If you prefer Canadian fauna, that is equivalent to 130 adult male moose(s) - or as some would say, meese.
Its concrete and steel base however, weighs more than twice that at 300 tons.
The pole was originally erected on the “Expo 86”Site but these days it is firmly planted at the North end of Surrey on the Barnes Wheaton dealership - the caretakers for this iconic structure.
And fluttering in full glory at the very top is of course the Canadian flag - the largest in the Lower Mainland.
Every three months, the flag is changed.
