Roland and Emma Nipp are a father-daughter guitar duo performing at G Day for Girls, an event celebrating girls aged 10 - 12, at the Creekside Community Recreation Centre on October 23, 2015.
Roland is a professional guitar teacher and Emma, a Grade 8 student, is already an experienced guitarist having played more than half her life. They play a wide repertoire of family-oriented music spanning the last 85 years: Beatles to Bing Crosby, Jazz Standards to movie soundtracks, as well as Country, Surf, and current pop songs.
Their music connection started when Emma was very young. Roland: “We always had music playing at home in some form or another, so Emma was exposed to sound, rhythm, and melody early on. When she was six (she’s now almost 13), I began teaching her guitar. At that time, I simply wanted to share my love of music, and have fun playing together. We started by learning children’s music and in time, progressed to our favourite pop/rock songs. In addition to being a lot of fun, it was also my hope that Emma would appreciate and develop the self-discipline needed to progress on the instrument.”
Over the past 2 years, Emma and Roland have been regularly performing to diverse audiences. They are well received at local markets, city festivals, community events, senior’s homes, as well as private functions. In addition to performing, they are currently putting the finishing touches on their first collaborative CD, a collection of holiday songs called The 12 Strings of Christmas.
Roland adds: “Most people who hear us usually assume the difficult parts are being played by me. Upon closer look, they’re surprised to discover the lead guitar parts are in fact coming from Emma’s fingers! It’s my hope that the girls attending G Day may be inspired by Emma’s playing, and pursue their interests and dreams, whatever they may be.”
