Restaurant Review: R&H Chinese Food

Special to the Post

I’m kind of sad to think that Lansdowne Mall will be replaced by condos in a matter of years. A lot of small, family owned businesses here will be shutting and hopefully they’ll find another place to open up shop. One that I admittedly have not tried until just now is R&H Chinese Food. Many say this is one of the best places for Xiao Long Bao (ie the Soup Dumplings). And after seeing Mijune’s post on Instagram about it, I just had to check it out myself.
The price for these Xiao Long Baos is pretty cheap compared to other restaurants, clocking in at about $7 after tax. You get six Xiao Long Baos which is pretty good value.
The Xiao Long Baos are made fresh – no really – made fresh right there. There is a woman standing there making dumplings (amongst other things).
The Xiao Long Bao wrapper is not too thick or too thin, and has a nice snap to them when you bite into it. The soup inside is piping hot (so don’t be impatient like I was!) but has a nice rich broth flavour to it. It’s not too salty and almost slightly sweet. The meat inside is good, also not too salty. I really enjoyed these Xiao Long Baos. It’s hard to say where is the best Xiao Long Baos in the city, but I will continue my search and say that this is definitely in my top three!
