Restaurant Review: Koerner’s

Near the top of my list of favorites is the Koerner Organic Burger at Koerner’s Pub. This might be surprising as it is the graduate student pub located at the University of British Columbia. The Koerner Burger is made with organic, free range, grass fed, antibiotic and hormone free beef, and is ground in house and served a nice medium rare. One of the most delicious things I’d ever eaten!

Featuring a 6 oz house ground beef patty with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and peanut butter, the Peanut Butter Maple Bacon Burger packed a punch of flavour but overwhelmed the other flavours. I would stick with their regular burger.

The patty was not cooked to that same beautiful pink colour inside as last visit. Even though I checked with the waitress for the patty to be medium rare, it came out well done. I was pretty disappointed. Cooking the patty all the way lost its juiciness and tenderness. But I’m also not surprised. Although Koerner’s is capable of putting out an awesome burger, consistency was never its strong point. Their Pho Nachos, as an example, have been amazing on some visits, and inedible on others. Considering most of the cooks in the kitchen are likely UBC students, I should be happy they get it right some of the time. Can I really say that Koerner’s has one of the best burgers in Vancouver, if they only get it right some of the time?  And that’s a question that everyone is going to have to answer for themselves. Considering that there are some places where I know that I can always get an awesome burger (Campagnolo Upstairs, Fable), I’m not sure whether I’ll be going out of my way to get to Koerner’s again anytime soon.
