Restaurant Review: Shizen Ya

Shizen Ya uses only brown rice for their sushi, and only organic ingredients. In fact, they claim that they are the first ever natural food Japanese restaurant chain in North America.

Since I would be eating a healthy lunch, I decided to indulge in some Agedashi Tofu featuring deep fried organic tofu and their own homemade tempura sauce. The dish was well executed where the deep fried coating remained bound to the soft tofu after taking a bite. They were generous with the grated daikon, ginger, and chopped green onions.

Another tasty item was the Spicy Tuna Sashimi. I was happy they use their own house made spicy sauce and marinate the buttery tuna in. The fish was fresh tasting with a nice kick. My only complaint was that the portion size was ridiculously small. For the price I expect more than what amounts to 1 regular slice of tuna sashimi cut into 5 bite-sized pieces.

To finish off my meal, I settled on the Yam Tempura Roll made with organic brown sushi rice. I didn’t mind the brown rice, as it was seasoned properly and had only a slightly chewier texture than that of regular sushi rice. As for the filling, it was about half avocado and half yam tempura. I personally prefer when there’s more yam tempura.

Overall I enjoyed my meal at Shizen Ya. I appreciated the care that they put into their food. It’s certainly not my favorite Japanese restaurant in town, but I would certainly return if I was in the area, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a slightly healthier option.
