Restaurant Review: Darby’s

The first appie was the Fried Butternut Squash Ravioli with homemade Indian spiced ketchup. The dish has either cheese or meat stuffed ravioli that are breaded, deep fried, sprinkled with parmesan, and then served with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.

I enjoyed the firm, chewy skin of the ravioli. The butternut squash filling was smooth and sweet. I’m not sure the sweetness worked well with the fried exterior. I would have definitely preferred if the ravioli were stuffed with something savoury, like the more traditional cheese or meat. I wasn’t sure why they paired the ravioli with an Indian-spiced ketchup rather than the more traditional marinara sauce. The ravioli didn’t need to be dipped into ketchup which is even sweeter. Plus the Indian spices just felt out of place.

The second appetizers were the Zucchini Tots also served with Indian-spiced ketchup. They were made with shredded zucchini rather than potato. These went over much better than the fried ravioli. The zucchini was a little mushier that I was expecting, but it was still enjoyable. The zucchini tots also paired much better with the Indian-spiced ketchup.

The Masala Burger featured a house made beef patty, masala sauce, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and onions on a pretzel bun. The masala sauce packed a punch. The sauce tasted predominantly of curry and turmeric, and was on the milder side in terms of heat. It was messy to eat. Fortunately the firm, chewy pretzel bun was able to withstand the sauce. The beef patty was juicy. Overall I enjoyed the burger.

They have good burgers and sandwiches, and the service is pretty good even busy.
