Crosscurrents concert features world’s foremost tabla master and jazz band leader

In the Chan Shun Concert hall, Jazz Master bassist Dave Holland, with his ensemble, joins virtuoso musician Zakir Hussain for an evening that bridges jazz and Indian music’s shared influences and intersections.

“Zakir Hussain and Dave Holland are such brilliant and inspiring artists in their own right, having the opportunity to host a ‘meeting of the minds’ between them is really an honour. There is a lot of shared ground between jazz and the music of India, which lays the groundwork for exciting musical experimentation,” says Joyce Hinton, Co-Managing Director of the Chan Centre.

Hussain, a child prodigy who toured the world at age 12, has collaborated with well-known musicians like Yo-Yo Ma, George Harrison and Van Morrison. He recently premiered his third concerto Peshkar – the first-ever for table and orchestra in April with the National Symphony Orchestra at Kennedy Centre.

Holland debuted with Miles Davis’ legendary Bitches Brew band in the mid-1960s. He is a known figure in the history of modern jazz who has performed with Spanish guitar legend Pepe Habichuela and also vocalist Betty Carter and Chick Corea.

Crosscurrents will also feature Louiz Banks on keyboards, Sanjay Divecha on guitar and Gino Banks on drums.

The event starts at 8 pm.
