Jimmy Tang
25
Career:
Occupation: Financial Services representative
Company: Westminster Savings Credit Union
Years: Started in April 2005 as a Call Centre Agent, then recently moved to current position in January 31
Hours worked per week: Full Time
I’m still in school, finishing off my two diplomas, but many of my classes are at night. I have some day classes but I have some flexible teachers who allow me to make up for what I missed during the work I do at home. So I do miss a few day classes.
Salary Range: $32,000 to $40,000 based on experience, education, performance.
Salary potential: $40,000 with more than 5 years experience and above average performance. Every year, the credit union reanalyzes pay scales according to the competition in the market. So every year, this number can change.
Best part of job: By far it’s the human interaction. Getting to meet with members, working with them, helping them satisfy their needs and also helping them with needs they didn’t even know about. Taking a proactive approach to help members achieve their financial goals and seeing my efforts pay off. It feels great to know I’m helping them.
Other possible career choices: Chartered Accountant (in 5 years time), any job dealing with numbers and people.
Education:
Degree: Financial Services Management (2 year diploma)
Commerce and Business Administration (2 year diploma)
Both diplomas fall under Faculty of Commerce, so after two years of study and completion of 10 additional credits in the faculty, I can obtain two diplomas.
Grad year: April 2006
School: Douglas College
Advice: First of all, work really hard in school. Getting the right education will help you jump towards that first step.
Also, searching for the right employer is important. Take a due diligence to who you want to work for. Every financial institution is different, find one that matches your personality and ambitions.
Credit unions work well for me because they are people oriented.
Lifestyle:
Favourite hobby: Reffing volleyball games for the Fraser Valley Volleyball Association.
And I enjoy riding on my motorcycle. Me and my buddies have a little motorcycle group in the summer time. We go riding anywhere from here to Whistler, to Lillooet to Hope. It’s called the Duffy Lake loop.
Upcoming vacation plans: In December, my cousin is getting married in Florida so I’ll be there for New year’s.
In five years, I see myself enjoying: Professionally, I see myself completing my degree in business with a major in accounting. I also see myself going into a Chartered Accountant position. Personally, I would like to marry my high school sweetheart.
