 CAREER

Occupation:
Hairstylist/Makeup artist

Propaganda Salons

Years at position:
One year as hairstylist at Propaganda and five years as makeup artist with M.A.C. before becoming a hairstylist.

Hours worked each week
(average): 40-50

Salary range in the industry:
Minimum wage/hour (apprenticing) to about $35,000 (as a busy junior stylist, gratuity included) and up depending on the commission structure of the salon. My boss, Andre Abboud was very supportive in helping me develop my career as a stylist, so it’s important for
new grads to find the most nurturing work environment possible.

Salary potential in the industry:
The salary potential is definitely very high depending on a stylist’s salon, years of
experience, retail sales and freelancing work on the side. Essentially, the more
efficiently one works and the larger the clientele base, the higher the salary one
can earn.

Best part of job:
My clients! I also enjoy the creative aspect of my work! I love making someone’s
day at the salon, and learning about life from these people who are from vastly diverse and
interesting backgrounds.

Other possible career choices with your educational background:
Hair product/colour sales representative, film/television/print stylist,
platform stylist, salon owner/manager…the list goes on. Stylists who are passionate, creative and ambitious can find or create a niche in almost any field.

EDUCATION

Degree:
Hair Art Design Diploma with Distinction

School:
John Casablancas
(Axis Training System)

Grad year: 2005

Length of program: Six months.

Did your school provide
any work placement?

One of my instructors Jimmy Lapoint was very instrumental in taking it upon himself to find us work placement during our course. Overall, the John Casablancas administrative
staff was very helpful if advice or direction was needed by a student in regards to finding job opportunities. I was very fortunate to have found Propaganda through my own research and networking with an acquaintance.

Advice:
Have a chat with as many accomplished stylists as you possibly can and find out how they achieved their success. Learning from great mentors is crucial in the hair world.

LIFESTYLE

Favourite recreational activity:
Running, reading and listening to music to recharge the body and mind.

Upcoming vacation plans:
My grandma’s 80th birthday bash in Edmonton and enjoying the sun at a cabin on the lake!

In five years:
I see a fulfilling balanced life including being a wife and mom, as well as a being a busy and more seasoned hairstylist. One thing’s for sure: I will never have “conventional hair”!
