Best part of job:
One of the more enthralling bits is the variety of projects we work on; usually for zoos, aquariums, science centres, museums, and other places like it. There is always something to learn outside of graphic design.
I guess one of the things that got me where I am now is seeing design in my day-to-day environment.
I studied fine arts in university previously, but I was attracted to graphic design because I wanted to create something that had a more tangible purpose.
The most challenging part of my job is dealing with clients. Balancing my own aesthetics with their demands is hard work. I think it is important to keep your integrity, but you also need the ability to compromise and see things from another person’s perspective. It’s different from other jobs I had before, just because it places you in a creative and challenging environment. I’m always learning something new every day and inspired by the people around me.
EDUCATION:
Degree(s): Bachelor of Arts - Major in Studio Art Diploma and Design Essentials
School: UBC and ECIAD at BCIT
Advice:
Take the initiative to learn things on your own; be independent about it. There are so many valuable resources around, so take advantage of them. Also, be able to take constructive criticism and use that as an opportunity that will lead you to consider other options. The program gave me a good foundation to build on. I am amazed by how much progress I’ve made over a span of a year. The skills that I have learned from the course will take a lot of time and practice to master. That, and a whole lot of troubleshooting too.
LIFESTYLE:
Favourite activity: I love being outdoors and exploring wild and remote places.
Upcoming vacation plans: I’d like to head over to Spain or down to Peru. I see Spanish lessons in the near future.
In five years, I see myself :
Over that course of time, I’d really like to have the opportunity to travel more and continue to develop my skills.
