Kwantlen University College’s White Rock location officially opened its doors January 27 with a great show of support from Kwantlen students, faculty and administration, and White Rock community members and leaders — including White Rock Mayor Judy Forster and Surrey-White Rock MLA Gordon Hogg.
Mayor Forster welcomed Kwantlen to the city: “It’s an historic occasion with a university opening in White Rock. A university enhances the life of a community and we’re delighted to have you here.”
The new location, at 15141 Russell Ave., provides a convenient location for White Rock and South Surrey residents to take high-quality undergraduate university courses in their community. Courses are being offered in Business, Humanities and Social Sciences. All of the courses bridge into bachelor’s degrees at Kwantlen.
“I’m delighted to have Kwantlen’s presence in White Rock,” said MLA Hogg, who was encouraged by the demand within his community for courses in the social sciences. “The new economies of the world are demanding the three Ts — training, tolerance and technology — and Kwantlen can help prepare us for this.”
Access to university courses in his own community spurred local business owner, Adam McCormick, to finish his bachelor’s degree. “When I heard about the White Rock location I knew that I had no more excuses.” McCormick is enrolled in a business law course in White Rock and says he is really enjoying it. “I can’t wait to see what is being offered next semester.”
Students in White Rock experience the same small class sizes as students at Kwantlen’s campuses in Langley, Richmond and Surrey. Classes in White Rock are taught by Kwantlen’s highly respected faculty, who are not only experts in their fields, they’re passionate professionals dedicated to delivering inspiring and relevant instruction to their students.
In addition to offering undergraduate education, the new location creates opportunities for Kwantlen to become more involved with the community in White Rock, developing research and other community projects, such as TALK (Third Age Learning at Kwantlen).
The White Rock location is the first of many similar community initiatives by Kwantlen.
