The Mini Cooper S Convertible is the latest variant of this iconic car and it’s rather special.
For 2005 the Mini headlights, taillights, and grille have been restyled resulting in a smoother, slightly more aerodynamic look.
However most of the wow factor in the Cooper S version comes from the power operated convertible top and the supercharged 1.6-litre engine that generates 168 horsepower.
Channeled through a six-speed manual gearbox, driving the Mini is probably the most fun you can have legally with your clothes on!
Despite its tiny dimensions, four adults can reasonably be accommodated and they don’t have to be all circus dwarfs either. The stylish cabin, groovy dash, comfortable seats and exemplary fit and finish still impress.
Operating the convertible top is akin to watching performance art as the top can either be partially retracted, like a large sunroof while driving up to 120kph or dropped all the way. The top goes down or up at the touch of a button, with no cumbersome manual latching.
"They are such great cars. Fast, quirky with a lot of character. As a designer theyhave so many details younever get tired of looking at it." Rupert Debear Graphic Designer Yaletown |
On the road
Decent seats and an excellent driving position ensure this is one sporty convertible that won’t leave you feeling beaten up after hours of driving.
Razor sharp steering, a short wheelbase, a low centre of gravity add to the pure sensory delight.
On the highways it’s a stable and secure feeling.
Hip city and urban dwellers with taste and refinement should seriously consider this car as it will never date or go out of fashion.
Its tiny size, tight turning circle makes it a doddle to park and maneuver.
The Mini is one car you will never get bored of. Buy the Cooper S version and you will become a Mini fan for life. One of the 10 best cars on the planet.
