Be prepared for the great Canadian outdoors

The warm weather is here, invigorating Canadians and providing a backdrop for all kinds of outdoor activities: family road trips, camping excursions and trips to the beach. And while spending more time outdoors and away from home can make for an exciting adventure, it also calls for some planning since we won't always have access to the amenities from home.
In order to make the most of the outdoor adventures and to avoid hassles, there are some basic things to remember to optimize your trip. Since public washrooms don't always seem as comfortable as home, or aren't as easily accessible, here are a few important items to pack along with you:

• Hand-sanitizer – When packing for any excursion, it's a good idea to include hand sanitizer. Being outdoors often means limited access to soap and water for proper hand-washing, so a hand-sanitizer is a must-have for picnics, the beach and camping trips.

• Toilet paper – There's nothing more uncomfortable than finding a washroom that's missing your number one need: toilet paper. Instead of going without, plan ahead and pack your own travel size roll – you never know when it might come in handy.

• Anti-diarrhea medication – If you're caught with diarrhea while outdoors, and there's no quick escape to a bathroom nearby, it can be a difficult situation. Diarrhea can also reduce your ability to absorb water and nutrients, and in most cases it is not better to let diarrhea run its course. It's always good to have Imodium Quick Dissolve on hand.

• Bottled water – Clean water may not always be readily available at campsites and beaches. Despite the urge to drink from a tap, hold off – you never know how clean the local water is. Plan ahead, and pack plenty of bottled water or water purification tablets.

• Pain reliever – Nothing is worse than being outdoors and not being able to enjoy the nice weather due to headache or muscle pain. Don't forget to include a pain reliever like acetaminophen to help with your aches and pains.

These simple suggestions can have a big impact on your trip and your health. Not only can you help protect yourself against harmful germs and bacteria, but you'll be able to focus your energy on enjoying your vacation in the great outdoors. - News Canada
