Situated a few hours away from the more popular Phuket and Phi Phi Islands, Krabi is making a name for itself as a rock-climbing destination, as professional climbers from all over the world flock to its towering limestone cliff faces, overhangs, and caves. 

The best spots for climbing, whether you are a beginner or experienced, is at the headland between the beaches of Tham Phra Nang and Rai Leh. Over 600 routes have been developed since the late 1980s when Krabi first began to attract people to its craggy mountains, according to a travel article in The Start.

Climbing enthusiasts can book with one of the many climbing companies at the tourist areas, particularly in the resorts of Ao Nang and Rai Leh beach. Packages include a guide and climbing gear.

Besides rock climbing, this beautiful area of Thailand has a lot more to offer in terms of beaches and outdoor attractions.

Shopping here is not as extensive as in Phuket or Bangkok, but the stalls still manage to offer a range of interesting Thai handicrafts and collectibles. 

Clothes and accessories are also a good deal, but bargain for the best deals is recommended as first-offer prices are always inflated.

For a peaceful outing, visit Wat Tham Suea or “tiger cave temple.”

It is so named because its founder, Jumnean Seelasettho, meditated there 30 years ago surrounded by tigers that protected him. Aside from being the site of a meditation centre, the temple is also a place of archaeological and historical interest as excavations in its compound have uncovered stone tools, pottery remains, and Buddha footprint crafting moulds.

Beware of the monkeys roaming the temple. They have been known to snatch visitor’s belongings!

The mineral pools of Klong Thom Hot Springs Waterfalls are an ideal destination for a hydrotherapy bath. What makes this hot springs different from others is that the water cascades down to form a hot waterfall.

A short drive away is Sra Morakot, or Emerald Pool, a beautiful natural pool that gets its name from the vibrant colours of its calm mineral waters. The intensity of the pool’s turquoise water varies according to the light and time of the day, and its famous emerald colour is best seen early in the morning.

Snorkelling and diving are popular around these islands, as is canoeing and kayaking to explore hidden offshore areas at a more leisurely pace. 

You can also try hopping on the back of an elephant to explore Krabi’s countryside.
