China has announced a five-year plan to keep an iconic river in Guilin, one of the most popular attractions in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, flowing year round. Three new reservoirs will be constructed at the upper reaches of the Lijiang River and its tributaries. The three reservoirs will be used to control flooding and replenish the Lijiang River during the dry season, when it often stops flowing. River cruises are popular in the area, which draws 14 million tourists annually.
