Komagata Maru inspires new book

The 100th anniversary of the Komagata Maru has inspired many artists and writers to create works that make sense of this tragic episode in Canadian and Indian history. Phinder Dulai’s latest book of poetry, dreams/arteries, provides new insight into the stories of the Komagata Maru. On Saturday, September 27, Surrey Art Gallery and Talonbooks will host the launch of dreams/arteries.
Phinder Dulai is the Vancouver-based author of dream/arteries (forthcoming in Fall 2014 from Talonbooks) and two previous books of poetry: Ragas from the Periphery (Arsenal Pulp Press, 1995) and Basmati Brown (Nightwood Editions, 2000). His most recent work has been published in Canadian Literature and Cue Books Anthology. Dulai is a co-founder of the Surrey-based interdisciplinary contemporary arts group, The South of Fraser Inter Arts Collective (SOFIA/c).
The event will feature a reading by the poet, and will be emceed by VIBC founder Mo Dhaliwal, with an introduction to the history of the Komagata Maru’s voyage by community historian and researcher, Naveen Girn. Harbhajan S Gill, president of the Komagata Maru Heritage Foundation will also provide brief remarks. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a cash bar. The Surrey Art Gallery is located at the Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 - 88 Avenue in Surrey. Visit www.talonbooks.com/authors/phinder-dulai for more information.
