Independent advocacy organization Leadnow is working to unite voters to defeat the Harper Conservatives in the 2015 federal election. The campaign’s local focus will be on the newly-created riding of Vancouver-Granville.
“The Harper government is secretive and unaccountable, and a growing majority of Canadians want change. But the Conservatives could win again if the opposition vote splits between the Liberals, the NDP and the Greens. That’s why we’re launching a door-to-door campaign to mobilize voters across party lines to defeat the Conservatives and move Canada forward,” said Jolan Bailey of Leadnow.
The group plans to make Vancouver-Granville one of their priority swing ridings for the national campaign. Results from existing ridings in the 2011 election suggest that the Conservatives would have narrowly won the new riding with just 35% of the vote, a result of split opposition support and Canada’s first-past-the-post electoral system.
Leadnow is not affiliated with any political party. In priority swing ridings, the group plans to facilitate a democratic process to ask local supporters to vote to formally endorse a candidate, focusing on individual candidates’ positions and their ability to defeat their Conservative opponents.
Leadnow is training volunteer teams to go door-to-door in key ridings before the 2015 federal election and aims to recruit hundreds of volunteers in Vancouver alone.
