Special to the Post
I couldn’t concentrate at work last week because I kept day dreaming of oozing orange yolks and sinfully buttery hollandaise sauce, I tried the new location of Yolk’s on Broadway at Cambie.
Perusing the menu, one could be overwhelmed with all the choices. It’s best to ignore the pancake or French toast options and skip right to the chicken and waffles or various iterations of eggs benny.
I ordered the Two Poached Eggs with Portobello Mushrooms, Arugula, Aioli, and Hollandaise served over top of their Truffle-Lemon Hash browns. I’ve actually tried all three options on previous visits to Yolk’s, and enjoyed the portobello mushrooms the most. They’re served as long, meaty, well-seasoned strips, complementing the other flavours better than the meat. The hollandaise sauce at Yolk’s is rich and buttery with just the right amount of lemon to brighten it up - decadent when mixed with yolks of the perfectly soft poached eggs.
The cherry on top is that you can get them over top of their Truffle-Lemon Hashbrowns. When you bite into these deep fried, crispy potato wedges, you’ll be blown away by the taste. The intensity of the flavours can vary from batch to batch. I’d prefer if they were more consistent.
I was pretty happy with my meal at Yolk’s. Even if the hash browns vary from visit to visit, you can always rely on their perfectly poached eggs and delicious hollandaise. The nice thing is that now that there’s a more central location on the Broadway corridor, it’ll be that much easier for me to get my benny fix. Hopefully that means I won’t be getting to the point was I’m dreaming of runny yolks instead of working anytime soon.
