Drunken Noms: Marulilu Cafe – Japanese Brunch

One Japanese restaurant that does breakfast is Marulilu Cafe. To start things, we had an order of the Takoyaki. These were steaming hot. The balls had a nice crisp coating that gave way to the soft dough and slightly chewy octopus. It had flavour from the takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise, bonito flakes, green onion and ginger sprinkled over top.
I didn’t order a breakfast item. Instead I got the Katsu Sandwich featuring a breaded deep fried pork cutlet, shredded cabbage, tomato, tonkatsu sauce, tartar, and garlic butter on ciabatta. I would not it order again. The thinly pounded pork cutlet had a crisp breaded coating and a somewhat chewy. The tonkatsu sauce gave the sandwich a surprisingly sweet profile. The tomato kept the sandwich moist. I also had Miso Soup, which was pretty standard.
We also had the Omu-Rice described as ketchup rice with bacon, onion, and mixed veggies covered in a thin omelet. Unfortunately, the dish was bland. The rice could have been more seasoned. The omelet was cooked nicely. but wasn’t enough to rescue it.
We also tried their famous rice burgers, particularly the Sukiyaki Rice Burger which was filled with sliced beef, mushrooms, shiritaki noodles, green onion, and sweet soy sauce. The rice burgers are really small – about the size of a soup can. The rice was greasy. Nonetheless it tasted like the sweet stir-fried beef that you’d get at a Chinese take-out restaurant.
Overall the food at Marulilu Cafe was somewhat unique, but not really anything special in terms of flavour. The food was decent; the prices, quite cheap. It’s in a convenient location. I probably won’t be back anytime soon, but I could probably be talked into a return visit in another year or so.
