Restaurant Review: The Dirty Apron Delicatessen

We checked out the Dirty Apron Delicatessen. The place was packed at noon on a weekday. The deli specializes in soups, sandwiches, and salads, although there’s also a warm entree on special every day.
I ordered theProsciutto Sandwich featuring figs, watercress, balsamic onions, and brie on cranberry sourdough. I love all the components of this sandwich, so I was a disappointed when it was overwhelmingly sweet because of the caramelized balsamic onions and half figs. The saltiness of the prosciutto still came through, and the melted brie made for an ooey gooey sandwich. I also liked the grilled cranberry sourdough. A decent sandwich, but it could improve.
On the side, I had the Brussel Sprout Salad featuring portobello mushrooms, watercress, and parmesan in a maple dijon dressing. The salad was very lightly dressed. My favorite component was the tender and flavourful portobello mushrooms. I would have preferred if the brussel sprouts were cooked for longer, but their flavour worked well with the dressing. The salad had bit of parmesan, but it provided a nice pungent saltiness to the salad.
We also got the Smoked Ham Sandwich featuring piccalilli, tomato, parsley and gruyere on sourdough. The smoked ham was flavourful without being too salty. What really made the sandwich pop was the spread of piccalilli (a mix of chopped pickled vegetables and spices), which added a brightness and a pleasant crunch.
We also ordered a bowl of the Squash Soup . The smooth soup was one of the better renditions we’d had. It was slightly sweet with notes of nutmeg, subtle notes of garlic, onions, and sage. It went well with the sandwich.
Overall, we enjoyed our lunch at the Dirty Apron Delicatessen. All ingredients used were high quality and that the sandwiches were well made. This may be one of the best sandwiches I’ve eaten in the past year. I’m coming back to try their daily entree specials, like the lamb and gnocchi.
