We ordered a few sushi items including a California roll and a couple of pieces of ebi nigiri – both which were standard.
We were impressed with the generous portion of seaweed given, and was pleased to find that it wasn’t slimy as seaweed can occasionally be. She enjoyed the dressing, as it was only lightly sweet where the sesame oil took center stage.
The Agedashi Tofu was in a dark dashi broth. Thankfully the broth tasted normal despite its colour. I really liked this version of the dish - the deep fried skin was thicker than normal giving it an extra crispy crunch. It also wasn’t greasy, despite the larger amount of deep fried coating. I’d happily order this again.
We decided to get the Tuna and Salmon Sashimi which oddly came served with four pieces of tuna and only three of salmon. Both fish were fresh, but a couple of pieces were poorly cut and a little on the mushy side. Nothing terrible, but worth noting.
The miso soup at Kitstaya was pretty standard but also had a handful of pieces of fake crab in addition to the regular seaweed and green onions.
The Dragon Roll featured a prawn tempura, avocado, and cucumber roll topped with unagi, mayonnaise, and unagi sauce. Although the individual components of the filling were good, I found that most of their flavour got lost amid all the ingredients. This roll had way too much rice unlike the earlier California roll.
It wasn’t maybe the best sushi restaurant in Vancouver, but it did the job in helping us get our sushi fix. It was also a relatively clean and large Japanese restaurant with pretty good service throughout. I won’t be going out of my way to return, but it works in a pinch.
