CAREER:
Age: 28
Occupation: Stand-up comic/ Entrepreneur in the tourism industry
Length at position: I’ve been doing Stand-up for 5-6 years. I recently started my own business 2 years ago.
Hours worked per week: 40 hours.
Salary: I receive a set pension from the government.
Potential Salary: This being a set pension, my “salary” wouldn’t be fluctuating anytime soon.
Best part of job:
I have been travelling around the world because both of my parents work in the airline industry, therefore I spend more time in the hotels than at my own home. My mother worked for Air Canada, and my dad was a general manager for Northwest Airline at Edmonton.
I started up my own company because throughout my travels, I have yet to see a hotel made for the disabled. I will give the same opportunity for the disabled to explore the world despite their physical situation. Creating a database to search for hotels with specific handicap facilities would be a good start.
After Sprott Shaw, the government hired me at Workable Solutions to promote employment for the disabled. Sprott Shaw was helpful in providing me the information and lists of the hotels, as well as the contacts that came with the list.
EDUCATION:
Degree(s
American Hotel Lodging Association Certificate.
School: International Business program at Langara
Advice: Ambition is the key to success and determination is the vehicle to get there. Don’t take no for an answer.
One of the key things in tourism is as long as you make them happy, you would be successful. That’s what I do in life: to make life a lot easier for other people. Stay positive too.
LIFESTYLE:
Favourite activity:
Playing poker. I’m a poker junkie.
Upcoming
vacation plans: Europe or Asia; this is to promote my company. For personal reasons, I would be flying off to Japan in 2 or 3 years.
In five years, I see myself :
Keeping the company self-sufficient and all that I will be doing is providing information to contacts and customers. While expanding my company, I would be going in tour as a stand-up comic or go on a cruise ship.
