Seen those funky TV commercials for Toyota‘s new Yaris? On a recent test drive we found it came across as a fun, driver-friendly car, ideal for female drivers who want something that‘s not too big or hard to park.

The new Yaris is literally flying out the showrooms. Surrey Toyota sales rep, Eric Yu says, “The new Yaris is very much a premium small car, good for families and young singles. It‘s very sophisticated.

“Yes the price is more expensive than its competitors, but it‘s reflected in the higher residual value when it‘s time to trade in or when the owner decides to sell the car.”


Space and storage: The Yaris provides sedan sized interior levels of space and comfort that belie the tiny exterior dimensions.


The front cabin features the center top of a dash instrument pod, a vertically shaped console for the climate controls and futuristic looking metal trim with over a dozen well placed cubbies and pockets for storing and reducing clutter in the cabin.


The rear compartment offers three seat belts while the trunk holds clever bins and hidden sub floors. Safety wise, two stage front airbags are standard, but there is no option of side airbags which should be addressed hopefully in future models.


Fuel economy: The Yaris is ULEVII (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle 11) rated. ULEV11 vehicles meet strict official fuel economy and emissions tests that classify them according to different levels of environment friendliness and pollution cleanliness.

 

All versions of the Yaris are powered by a small 1.5-liter four cylinder engine. The little guy sips fuel, you can expect 6.9L/100km in the City and 5.5L/100km on the highway.

Three models to choose from: The Yaris comes in three and five door hatchback models. It also comes in three trim grades, CE, LE and the top line sportier RS.



  • The entry level 3-door CE model, manual transmission, base price: $13,580.
  • The better equipped LE: $14,175. The 5-door LE Yaris, sticker price: $14,910.
  • The Sporty RS versions: $16,800. The 5-door RS: Starts $17,615.

Options: Start adding options and the Yaris gets increasingly expensive. Major options come in three packages offering features such upgraded stereos, electric windows; remote keyless entry, power door locks, airconditioning, and antilock brakes. Options packs run from $595 to $2,420 according to the package you choose.
