Parwinder Kaur says she is not the only one from Canada doing what she did.
Deserted by her husband in Toronto, who is 35-years older to her, the divorcee returned to Punjab, India to marry again.
She, however, was not looking for love, police say.
The 30-something woman was allegedly duping young Indian men to marry her in exchange for hundreds of thousands of rupees and a life in Canada.
At least two men have claimed they have married Parwinder after giving her cash and gifts while she was living with a third over the last few months.
Police believe she has more victims.
“I am not the first one to have done this. I was deserted by my husband, who is of the age of my father. There are dozens of NRI women who have been exploiting Punjabi youths at the instance of their husbands,” Parwinder told local police, according to Indian media reports.
The phenomenon of Non-Resident Indians returning home to marry and later abandoning their spouses has mainly involved male suspects.
Official studies in India say about 30,000 women in India have been left behind by their overseas-based husbands.
Cases involving women suspects are rare but increasing say Indian police.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Punjab, Rachpal Singh Hara said his team arrested Parwinder on September 3 in Ludhiana, while she was getting married to Beant Singh of Momnabad village near Ahmedgarh.
Beant Singh claimed he had given her 300,000 rupees (about C$7330) for the marriage in the hopes he could follow her to Canada as her husband. He had pawned family jewelry, mortgaged property and taken a loan for the wedding.
What Beant did not know, was that Parwinder, had earlier this year married Kuldip Singh, an insurance agent in Punjab’s Manakwal village.
He gave her 1.2 million rupees (about C$30,000) and a car after registering the marriage with a set of “fake parents” at the government office in Ludhiana. The newlyweds also threw a reception at restaurant in Neelon.
Parwinder took off with her car shortly after the wedding prompting her estranged husband to lodge a police report.
Kuldip Singh said the woman entrapped him by saying she was a divorcee.
“She said she had an unhappy marriage as her husband in Canada, who was much older to her. “I wanted to settle abroad. I am the only brother of three sisters and the family is largely dependent on me,” said the shocked Kuldip Singh.
They have asked other victims to come forward but believe some would stay away for fear of social ridicule.
Parwinder came to Canada after marrying her first husband Gurdeep Singh Chahal and settled in Toronto’s Finch Avenue area. She also addresses on Sultan Pool Drive in Toronto and Kipling Avenue in Etobicoke.
