Party & Riding: NDP candidate, Burnaby-Edmonds
Political Background: Elected as MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds, 2005
Career Highlight: Being able to help residents in Burnaby-Edmonds with their issues.
The Biggest Issue(s) Facing BC’s Multicultural Communities Today: One of the biggest issues facing members of BC’s multicultural communities today is the lack of recognition of foreign credentials – professional certificates, university degrees and specialized training – many recent immigrants have achieved prior to coming to live in British Columbia. As a result, they often end up working in low wage jobs that have nothing to do with their chosen field. This is compounded by BC’s low minimum wage of $8 an hour ($6 an hour training wage) that hasn’t been raised by the Campbell Liberal government in 8 years.
What My Party Brings to the Political Table for BCs Multicultural Communities: New Democrats will improve the foreign credentialing process in BC to help improve opportunities for skilled immigrants to secure work in their chosen field and to help employers allevaite shortages of skilled workers. New Democrats will raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour and link it to inflation to help make sure BC’s lowest-paid workers never fall so far behind again.
What I Will Bring to the Table for all of my Constituents: I will bring to the table my record of hard work and accomplishments that have benefited local residents in Burnaby-Edmonds.
The strong working relationships I have developed with our many community agencies in Burnaby-Edmonds and across the city has allowed me to help so many constituents over the past four years when they sought workable solutions for their problems. I look forward to being able to continue my open door policy to meet the needs of people in Burnaby-Edmonds.
Final Thoughts on the Future of BC: Gordon Campbell’s policies are hurting everyday families across BC. I believe if Campbell’s Liberals are re-elected, they’ll cut and privatize like never before – helping their friends and donors get rich, while your family faces higher costs. Carole James and the New Democrats will put your family’s interests ahead of private interests and we will protect hospitals, schools, seniors care, the environment and the jobs and incomes of ordinary British Columbians.
