Accent on Career: Erika Lickova

NAME: Erika Lickova

Q: What is your first language?
A: Slovakian.

Q: How many years have you been in Canada?
A: 8

Q: What was your job in your home country?
A: A nurse.

Q: Where do you see yourself working in five years?
A: Any Government Agency.

Q: How has taking Accent Reduction lessons changed your life?
A: It hasn’t changed completely yet, but I’m definitely in a process. In the first place, I have gained self-confidence. Also, my level of shyness decreased in terms of speaking in public. I can actively engage myself in a conversation with born Canadians without hesitation. The awkward moments at the interview where I would be stammering and speaking quietly are replaced by almost proactive answers. It’s a great feeling! I guess my true self is coming out.

Q: Tell us about a time your accent caused difficulty?
A: I don’t exactly remember being not understood by any means. But the way I’d pronounced or stressed certain words would cause English speaking people to give me a puzzled look. One of the first things I learned at the Accent Reducing Center was to say my name clearly. I struggled with this because of the “R” in my name. Now everyone I introduce myself to can hear it and no one messes up my name anymore. I love it!

Q: What is the greatest strength you can offer your employer?
A: Dedication and loyalty.

Q: What advice do you have for other Internationally Trained Professionals (ITP)?
A: Reading and discussing material after with someone who can correct and assist with comprehension. Although, being surrounded by people whose first language is English is a big help, I still needed a professional help. I really appreciate Jennifer’s personal approach. She’s pointed at my weak spots right away and helped me to get through them. The simple tricks she showed me with the tongue and my lips greatly improved my pronunciation.

Q: What can be done to assist the transition of ITP’s?
A: The importance of pronunciation and the correct accent make a complete shift in speaking. It takes a lots of practice. Too bad it takes time (laugh)

Q: What do you want from an employer?
A: Giving me a chance without prejudice.
