Mehfil Magazine has established a $40,000 Endowment to provide financial assistance for journalism students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
“We feel it’s important to support good journalism because it plays such an important role not only in our communities but in democracy in general,” said Minto Vig, the co-publisher and editor of Mehfil which has been reporting on current events in the Lower Mainland Indo-Canadian community since 1993.
Vig added that Mehfil was the first Indo-Canadian publication in B.C. to establish an endowment of this size and hoped other organizations would follow the lead in nurturing the province’s next generation(s) of journalists.
The Kwantlen Journalism program offers students both a four-year Bachelor of Applied Journalism and a two-year diploma.
“Our journalism program gives students a firm grasp of the industry’s best practices and core values, preparing them for promising careers in multimedia journalism”, said Social Science’s Dean Robert Adamoski.
“We are very grateful for Mehfil’s support of our students’ education.”
