One of my favorite dishes is their Sichuan Fried Noodles featuring shredded pork, cabbage, garlic stems, peppers, green onions and sichuan chili sauce. I always opt for the blade sheared noodles over the thin noodles. I was disappointed that I couldn’t detect any heat. Nonetheless the dish was solid.
Next were the Northern Pork Dumplings featuring pork, chives, cabbage, and green onion. They were boiled, not steamed. I wasn’t a fan of the filling. It was composed mainly of the vegetables.
We got their Seasonal Leafy Vegetable which was supposed to be lightly sauteed with garlic. Instead, the rice vinegar overpowered the dish.
The Xing-Jiang Cumin Lamb is dry stir-fried with green peppers, crushed cumin, and chili flakes. The strong cumin flavour made this a tasty dish. The chili flakes added a kick. The onion and red and green peppers added freshness. It’s worth trying.
One of my favourites is the Dan-Dan Noodles featuring a spicy peanut sauce with minced pork and spinach. I stick with the traditional thin noodles. The peanut sauce has heat and veers more savoury than sweet. The noodles are delightfully chewy.
Their Beef Rolls won awards, so we made sure ordered it. Unfortunately, the rolls have shrunken substantially since my last visit. The pancakes were still flakey and not overly greasy, but the beef was on the dry side.
Our very last dish was the Steamed Soft Pork Buns. The soft, pillowy buns were lightly chewy and held a small amount of sweet and savoury pork within. Simple, but well executed.
I got my noodle fix. I was satisfied. But the restaurant isn’t quite what it used to be. Their noodles are still fantastic, and they have a number of other great items as well, but the beef rolls just aren’t the same. I guess you can’t have it all.
