‘Squid Games’ comes to Vancouver for Halloween

Like millions around the world, Han Seung-min, the Korean-Canadian chef who helms Sai Woo, one of Vancouver’s oldest and most iconic restaurants, binge-watched ‘Squid-Game” – the hit Netflix dystopian drama series that has taken the world by storm.

“I played these games growing up as a kid in Korea,” said Chef Han, who together with his staff, have come up with a unique Halloween treat for Vancouverites – Squid Game Nights at Sai Woo.

“It will be a unique way to enjoy Halloween this year,” said Chef Han, who has prepared a six-course traditional Korean dinner menu, featured in the drama series for the special evenings.

Staff will don Squid Game costumes while Chef Han will be the ‘Front Man’ orchestrating the evening from his kitchen.

In between bespoke cocktails and the dinner courses, patrons will play at their tables Ppogi or "honeycomb’, which involves cutting out shapes from a sugar-and-honeycomb candy with a needle and a version of “Gganbu” or the marbles game.

During the evening, patrons will be given numbers and be called out to take centre stage and play Ddakji - a game that will be played with two tiles. The goal is to slam your tile into one that's laying on the ground, causing it to flip onto its other side.

The non-lethal, atmospheric and a sure-fire memorable night comes with house prizes for the top winners.

“No we won’t be eliminating anybody,” quipped Chef Han.

Squid Game Nights at Sai Woo begins Oct 28 and runs through Halloween night

Sai Woo, opened its doors in the 1920’s at 158 E Pender St. in Vancouver’s historical Chinatown.

With its mix of old and new in the main dining area, an underground parlour that harkens to Chinatown’s early cultural charm and a long bar serving classic cocktails, Sai Woo is an eclectic destination that has become the new go-to place in Vancouver’s dining scene.

Chef Han introduced his New Korean cuisine to Vancouver at his Kosoo restaurants on Robson Street and Cardero Street before taking over Sai Woo.

A true master at his craft, The Cordon Bleu-trained chef, and protégé of chef Jean-Francis Quaglia of Provence Marinaside is renowned for his intricate Vancouver Inspired Asian menu grounded in Canada’s natural bounty from the land and sea.
