Simone Grewal tunes out TV for morning radio gig

By Maheen Nusrat

As of Monday June 2nd, 2008, the listeners of RJ 1200 will be woken up to the sweet and energetic voice of Simone Grewal and Dean Atwal’s suave British come Canadian accent.

Grewal and Atwal will now be hosting Off the Wall, a play on the surnames of the two hosts, every weekday mornings from 6am to 10am.

The popular duo of Raakhi Sinha and Gopi Sian who had been hosting for the past year and a half, the Wake Up Show, will now be switching their good-natured banter to the evening from 7pm to 11pm due to expanding business commitments with the South Asian Arts.

Simone started with Z 95.3, followed by stints at Shaw TV, The Weather Network and City TV, and finally moving to OMNI TV (now CHNU 10) in 2005 as the Community announcer and host of The Hall, for three years. She says: Radio is her "first love" and becoming a part of the RJ team is ideal as it "represents the interests and lifestyles of the younger South Asian community, which I’m an active part of".

Atwal, a long time colleague of Simone at OMNI TV, was a former BBC broadcaster, and is well-known from his appearances on Channel M, and the popular automotive program The New Driver’s Seat, on Shaw and City TV. Dean said: "With the ever changing landscape of the increasing South Asian population in the Lower mainland and Fraser Valley, we find ourselves with an opportunity to cater to an audience that is searching for fresh, relevant entertainment that is both local and from the motherland. We bring the new sound of South Asian Canada."

Terry Mahoney, the General Manager of CHNU 10 said: "It is certainly a bitter/sweet occasion when respected colleagues move on to other opportunities.

On the one hand we will miss them and the unique presence they brought to our team yet, on the other, we, as their cheerleaders, are very happy to see them advance their careers.

In this instance, we are pleased that both Simone and Dean will continue to work with us in various capacities so both we and RJ 1200 will continue to benefit from these two great talents."
