Gala to benefit cancer group

The Wish Upon a Star Charity Gala, presented by All About You Productions, returns this year on July 18.

The gala began as a wish to give back to the community that has helped thousands of B.C. patients throughout the past 70 years. Last year’s gala was attended by more than 200 people and raised $12,327 for The BC Cancer Foundation.

All proceeds this year will go to cancer research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency. The gala is organized by Deborah So, 25, and Humphrey Tam and Vivian Chan, both 28.

Vivian is a cancer survivor. She had a portion of her tongue cut out to stop the cancer from spreading, and had to learn to speak with half a tongue.

"I remember vividly that during my treatment, great care and support were given to me by all the staff at the BC Cancer Agency," says Vivian. She and her friends decided to give back to the agency by holding a charity gala event.

This year’s fundraising goal is $16,000. The event takes place from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at the Roundhouse Community Centre, and includes stand-up comedian Carter Hortie and a fashion show with Twigg & Hottie, Elroy Apparel and d a c e. There will also be a silent auction with items donated by supporters, as well as a 50/50 draw. The 350 expected guests will be treated to a feature menu specially designed for this event.
