Empanada varieties in Filipino store

Along Fraser street, Filipino food has always been easy to find.

But only one store called Snack Box offers a wide variety of Philippine-styled Empanadas.

Filipino empanadas usually contain a filling flavored with soy sauce. It also contains ground beef or chicken, chopped onions, and raisins in wheat flour dough.

Snack Box offers different varieties of empanadas aside from the usual flavours.

Take for example its Mexican empanada, filled with Jalapeño - a medium to large size chili pepper which is prized for the warm, burning sensation when eaten.

Other flavours such as the Hawaiian Empanada is filled with grated cheddar cheese and sweetened sliced-ham.

The Vegetarian Empanada has mushroom, string beans, carrots and, upon request, sweet corn.

“It’s like a big surprise,” says Bibiana Binala, 37, of Lion’s Gate Hospital, who had her hands full taking a tray of 25 empanadas to her husband and kids.

“It’s good to know Snack Box’s homestyle products is now available in selected Filipino stores.

The name comes from the Spanish verb empanar, meaning to wrap or coat in bread. Usually the empanada is made by folding a thin circular-shaped dough patty over the stuffing, creating its typical semicircular shape.

Empanadas are also known by a wide variety of regional names.

Snack Box and its freshly-baked/fried empanadas is located at 4384 Fraser Street.
It also serves other Filipino party favourites, such as stuffed ground pork Embotido, Lumpiang Shanghai (spring rolls), Philippine Wonton Soup known as pancit molo and many more.
