Vancouver wows Indonesian idol

Indonesian pop star Delon

Indonesian pop star Delon came to Vancouver to help spread the message of love for the less fortunate through his music.

Vancouver, in turn, has captivated this young and talented entertainer who performed at the Spectacular Saturday Night show, an event for charity presented by the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia and DMT Entertainment last November 19. "It's a very good city, the weather is very good, and the people are friendly," the soft-spoken Delon said.

Delon, a runner-up in the Indonesian Idol 2004 contest, is a rave in his home country, with his career in music and movies taking off like a rocket ship.

"I'm very glad and excited. I'm very happy," Delon said in a press conference at the Indonesian Consulate that was also attended by young admirers.

Held at the Croatian Cultural Centre, the show will benefit the Abhimata Witrasamaya orphanage which provides shelter to babies and children in Indonesia.

Proceeds from the Spectacular Saturday Night show will also go to the Bethesda Ministry of Love in Vancouver, a charity institution working in both Indonesia and Vancouver to provide care for forgotten people living in poor communities, people on the street and those suffering from drug addiction and AIDS.

Formerly Stanislaus Dalon Thamrin, Delon has been voted as MTV Indonesia's Most Favourite Male in 2005.

Indonesia's Consul General Bunyan Saptomo warmly welcomed Delon at the consulate, expressing his deep appreciation for the pop star's help in promoting charity.

"We at the Indonesian consulate support this event because the objective of this event is a noble one which is to support an orphanage in Indonesia and support charity carried out by the Bethesda Ministry in Canada," Saptomo said.

Saptomo also said that the event will "promote understanding, especially cultural understanding between Indonesia and Canada. Hopefully this promotion will lead to peaceful relations between Canada and Indonesia.
