Name:  Rachel Jones
Age: 25
Title: Makeup artist
Best part of the job: Always being creative

CAREER
Occupation:  I’m a makeup artist and a teacher at John Casablancas. I teach beauty and effects makeup.
Company: John Casablancas
Years: 5 years
Hours worked each week: I’m here everyday. It’s about 30 hours a week. I love working with John Casablancas Institute of Applied Arts; the team of instructors and admin staff are so supportive and caring.
Salary potential: The potential is huge. Outside school, it’s $200-500 per day on a movie set. For print it’s about the same. For bridal makeup on weddings, $100-300 a day. If you’re a personal makeup artist with a celebrity, it’s $1,000-3,000 a day.
Best part of job: Working with new people, getting to travel, just always being creative. You have enough opportunity for creativity and growth. I am continually inspired by my fellow teachers and students alike. There are many aspects for growth. It’s not just a day job: one day you’re teaching, another day you could be on a film set.
Other career options: As well as teaching I work in other areas of the industry such as film, TV, print and retail. I’m also a painter. In addition to this, I do a lot of art directing for photo shoots. The career options are very much creative as you can think of. There are no limitations.

EDUCATION
Diploma: Makeup Artistry and Special Effects from John Casablancas. I also have a degree in Fine Arts from Emily Carr.
School: John Casablancas
Grad year: 2000
Work placement: We hire our students back to do model testing and actor headshots.
Advice: Choose a great school and that means choosing Casablancas. Do research, get a diploma. You have to be a people person, have a positive attitude. Be professional and have a passion for it.

LIFESTYLE
Favourite recreational activity:  Painting. I do a lot of drawing. I also make a lot of hats. I have a business on novelty hats.
Upcoming vacation plans: It’s not really vacation. The school is going to Los Angeles for a big trade show. It’s for June 26-28. So we’ll be heading to LA. I will also be doing a little bit of traveling in B.C. for film sets.
In five years, I see myself: Continuing with my passion for the arts. As an artist, I will continue working on my career, hoping to enjoy success and recognition. I’ll also be doing some more traveling.
