Careers in Business Analysis: Joyce Wong

CAREER:

Occupation: Analyst (Business Banking)
Company: Vancity
Length at position: 10 months

Hours worked per week: 37 hours and a half

Salary(Potential): $60 - 70K
Best Part of Job: I have the opportunity to work with companies ranging in various industries, meeting key individuals within management and helping them grow their business.
It is interesting to learn the intricacies of the foundation of a business and how it performs relative to the competition within that particular industry, and how one business is more successful than the other in the market place.
Inspiration: My career has been mostly sales-oriented, predominantly in portfolio account management prior to taking on this new challenge. Upon enrolment in the CMA program, I was intrigued to look at other opportunities within the financial industry that can utilize my training and education.
Challenges:
Every file presents a different scenario. There is no set formula to adjudicate the creditworthiness of one company and apply the same method for other credit applications. This is what makes the role of the analyst interesting and difficult in itself.

EDUCATION:
Degree(s) and Schools:
Degree in Economics and Minor in Commerce; UBC and CMA
Advice:
One of the most common challenges that people have is not establishing a realistic goal. It is important to think big, but you have to understand the path of getting there.
Do set goals in a step-by-step basis.
Benefits of Program:
CMA has given me a new window of opportunity to diversify my career experience. I have become a more big-picture-and-forward-thinking individual.
