Mythili Prakash performs Tagore's Chandalika

The story of Chandalika is based on an ancient Buddhist fable, but Tagore gave it added dimensions, through selection of the characters, in Indian philosophy and with the powerful pull of love, both physical and spiritual.
Chandalika centers on Prakriti, a lowly untouchable social-outcast. Into her dreary and dehumanized life walks in Ananda, a disciple of the Buddha, who accepts water from her and tells her that all humans are created equal.
Ananda’s compassion and rejection of the repugnant practice of untouchability turns out to be a life-altering experience for Prakriti.
Tagore created this dance-drama as a platform and a delivery system to reach into the heart of a tradition-bound India that wrongly dehumanized a stratum of people based on birth.
Chandalika has a very high creative input from the composer, in artistry, philosophical depth, social significance and rural-urban reach.
