Try/Catch

Careers: Women in computing
Who: Shannon
Where: SFU (3rd year)
Degree: Double major in Computing Science & English

Being a women and working in the computing field has its perks.
Such as getting a summer job at the global headquarters of the world’s most dynamic software company, Google Inc.
Shannon completed a Software Engineering internship at Google’s Mountain View, California office last year. They liked her work so much that this year she will be returning for her second internship starting in May.
In the fall, she plans to add to her resume of international experience by participating in a field school to Italy in the fall.
In the computer science field there is an estimated ratio of 6 men to one every female who graduates with a degree and then goes on to work in the industry.
That makes Shannon a big catch in the eyes of elite companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook and others.
Ever since she arrived at SFU, she has been actively involved in the University community. Shannon has held the positions of Secretary, Director of Activities and President in the Computing Science Student Society, and is currently the Vice-President.
She has also mentored first-year Computing Science students in both the SFU Tech-Connect program and the Google Elements program.
Shannon strives hard for academic excellence, and is on a full-ride scholarship as well as consistently being on the Dean’s Honour Roll and winning the Computing Science Student Society Award.
To learn more about opportunities for women in computing and applied sciences, attend the Try/CATCH conference. Workshops cover web development and robotics, and students will meet female industry representatives and mentors at a reception.
Lunch and prizes are provided, including a iPad 3.
No computing science experience necessary!
This event takes place at SFU Burnaby campus on Saturday, April 28th, from 10:30AM to 6PM.
