Restaurant Review: Touhenboku Ramen

We were started off with a sampler of their appetizers including an Ebifry, Takoyaki, Korokke, and Chicken Karaage. My two favorites were the korokke, which sported a super crunchy panko exterior and soft potato center, and the takoyaki, which had a soft, tender center and plenty of flavouring from the bonito flakes and drizzle of sauces. The ebifry was unfortunately overcooked.

I went for the Red Spicy Ramen in pork broth with soy sauce, thin noodles, and pork belly. I was surprised the broth tasted strongly of peanut. It is made with peanut oil. I wasn’t really a fan of the peanut flavour, and would have preferred if it would have been more spicy instead. On the bright side, the noodles had a good chew, the egg sported a liquid gel-like yolk, and the pork belly had a good amount of fat.

We had Dense Chocolate Cake for dessert. Unfortunately, this cake was dense and quite dry. This was my least favorite of the desserts.

The Classic Cheesecake wasn’t so much classic as it was Japanese. It was incredibly light and fluffy, making it much easier to eat than your more traditional North American version. I wish that the drizzle of lemon sauce were larger.

Mille Crepe is traditional French dessert made by layering delicate crepes and whipping cream until the stack has reached the height of a cake (mille crepes = thousand crepes). I enjoyed it. The stack of crepes was lighter than I was expecting, and was fairly simple tasting.

I wasn’t a big fan of the Red Spicy Ramen that I tried, but I’d be curious to try their others. With so many options in soup bases, there has to be one out there that suits everyone’s preference!
