Daughter of Late Ravi Shankar performs in an Evening of Socially conscious Music Apr. 27

Anoushka Shankar is set to perform selections from her new album, Reflections, at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts Apr. 27.

Her songs draw on classical ragas as well as contemporary cross-cultural pieces that showcase the versatility of the sitar across musical genres. Guest instrumentalists include Ojas Adhiya (tabla), Pirashanna Thevarajah (mridangam), Ravichandra Kulur (flute), Danny Keane (cello and piano), and Kenji Ota (tanpura).

“Vancouver audiences will be entranced by her impeccable musicality and captivating presence on stage. Joined by a group of extraordinary musicians on an array of different instruments, this is sure to be an unforgettable evening here at the Chan Centre,” said Joyce Hinton, Co-Managing Director of the Chan Centre.

The first track on the item is recorded with her half-sister Norah Jones on the piece called “the Sun Won’t Set”. They wrote the song 30 days after the death of their father. Vanessa Redgrave also sings in “Remain the Sea”, a commentary on the European refugee crisis.

Anoushka has won numerous awards including the British House of Commons Shield in 1998 and the Songlines Best Artist Award in 2012. She has also been nominated for six Grammy Awards.

She learned Indian classical music from her father and guru, the late Ravi Shankar. At age 13, she made her professional debut as a sitarist.
