Reconnecting with traditional roots inspires Taiwanese-Canadian musician’s latest album

Award-winning family folk artist and singer-songwriter Ginalina and the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble will perform a fusion of modern and traditional folk songs at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden on Feb. 26.

In "Going Back: Remembered and Remixed Family Folk Songs", you go on a musical journey through the rich tradition of Asian folk songs — both familiar and foreign stories.

In 2020 inspired Ginalina to research traditional Far East folk songs as a way to connect with her parents and her own roots. When she recorded a remixed selection of Chinese and Taiwanese songs, her goal was to preserve and celebrate part of the Asian-Canadian culture. Ginalina also reached out to Diana Kadota with theVancouver Chinese Instrumental Music Society as part of her research into traditional instruments, stories and music from Asia.

Over the past two years, she learned and translated seven vintage children’s songs and traditional folk tunes with the help of her parents.

Ginalina has been recognized with 3 Juno nominations, 4 Canadian Folk Music nominations, and 2 Western Canadian Music Awards.

The musicians on the album are: Ginalina (Vocals/Guitar/Uke), Mario Vaira (Bass/Guitar/Slide/Percussions), Steve Charles (Banjo/Accordion), Spencer Capier (Violin, Mandolin), with special guests Ji Rong Huang (Erhu) and Sarah Tan (Guzheng). It was produced by Ginalina and Mario Vaira at Five Fathom Studios and mastered by Brock McFarlane at CPS Mastering. Kelley Wills did the artwork for this project at Brainflower Designs.

The event takes place at 2 pm. Tickets are available at Eventbrite: www.vancouverchinesemusic.ca
