Conference celebrates Japanese touch

The Canadian Shiatsu Society of British Columbia presents the 15th International Shiatsu Conference in Vancouver, featuring therapists from around the world, on Aug. 9 and 10.

The B.C. society is a non-profit organization of Shiatsupractors who promote original Shiatsu therapy developed by the founder, Tokujiro Namikoshi Sensei, and regulated by the Ministry of Health in Japan.

This year’s event is a triple celebration as 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the Canadian Shiatsu Society of British Columbia and the Canadian College of Shiatsu Therapy, both based in North Vancouver. It is also the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Canada.

Alternative health professionals will gain insights on healing from three esteemed Shiatsupractors from Japan, Hawaii and Spain, whose lectures at the conference will reflect the international importance of this hands-on, alternative therapy.

Anyone who wants to experience the benefits of this therapy can come to the Vancouver Public Library between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Aug. 9, where free treatments will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The society is the official local Canadian branch of the Japan Shiatsu Association and the only Shiatsu Association approved in B.C. by the International Shiatsu Association and the Japan Shiatsu College
